Every fitness journey begins with lofty goals: to be stronger, have more energy, or simply fit into our jeans. But let’s face it; motivation can be tricky. Between busy lives, long workouts, and an overwhelming urge to lay on the couch, it is tough to stay motivated to move.

However, you aren’t alone, and it is relatively easy to shift that motivation back to you.Fitness motivation isn’t about perfection; it is about discovering what fuels your drive and baking it into your daily routine.

It could be learning about smaller, achievable goals, or changing the workouts so they are fun! Small changes can make a huge impact! In this guide, we will provide you with very practical, usable tips that will help to stay the course and keep moving forward even when your motivation wanes. Let’s move on!

Start with Your ‘Why’: Make It Personal

Think about your reason for wanting to get fit before you even tie your sneakers. We are not talking about losing weight or toning, dig a little deeper. Perhaps you want the energy to play with your kids or feel good when you look in the mirror.

When your goals link to your values, it makes it easier to overcome those days when the last thing you want to do is work out. Write it down, keep it front and center, and let people’s “why” help anchor them when their motivation is low.

Having a strong personal reason will shift your mindset from “I have to work out” to “I get to work out”. It is not a punishment; it is an investment in your future self. Each time you pass on the snooze button and opt for a healthier alternative to your meals, YES YOU are saying yes to your goal! Keep the “why” in your forefront, and remind yourself often. It is your anchor when life gets overwhelming.

Set Real Goals, Not Perfect Ones

We all enjoy a big goal—an element of excitement and thrill emerges when we think about losing 20 pounds or participating in a marathon. However, having a target that seems too far away can give you a feeling of running out of steam. Instead, break your big goal into smaller, doable wins.

For example, if you would like to run the marathon, your first goal may be simply running a mile without stopping, or if you want to feel healthier or stronger, that could mean doing 10 push ups. These micro victories increase confidence and have the effect of making it feel like you are still moving forward, even when there is little progress, and this is important.

Having realistic targets will also help avoid the trap of all-or-nothing thinking. If you miss a workout or eat a cookie, you haven’t failed. You’ve simply experienced being human. Following this, perfection is not expected. Progress is the goal.

Always make sure to set goals that fit your life, adjust them as needed, and you celebrate all of your wins along the way. Healthy motivation grows when you feel you are succeeding, even in the smallest ways. So go for it, take the first step in your journey. You don’t need to be perfect, just consistent.

Make Fitness Fun Again

Let’s face it: if your workouts feel like hard work, you’re unlikely to keep it going. The secret to long-term motivation is simply enjoyment. That may include dancing in your living room, or participating in a boxing class, going on a hike, or even playing a sport you enjoyed as a kid. Fitness does not only happen in a gym or in strict form or fashion, it only matters if you get the heart going and find yourself smiling.

Trying different things is a great way to keep your routine fresh and exciting, but it also will help you discover what you enjoy. You might find out that you prefer group classes, or you might find yourself running the same route alone in the early morning the best. Whichever it is or might be, go for it.

The more you look forward to your workouts, the more likely you are to do them. Do not be afraid to shake things around, try new activities, and most importantly, make fitness something that is not dreary or dreaded. It should be enjoyable.

Build Habits, Not Just Hype

Motivation is a fickle trait; it comes and goes, but it is your habits that will push you on when motivation disappears. If you are counting on willpower alone, sooner or later, you will run into a wall. That’s where habits come into play. Pick a time of day that works for you, and try to stick with it! Even prepping your workout clothes the night before will help! The more automatic your habits become, the less you need to “feel motivated” to start.

You also want to set yourself up for success. Keep your gear in the open. Plan meals ahead of time so you only have to reach for the healthy food. You want to track your progress along the way, whether that be with a fitness app or an old-fashioned notebook.

These are all little habits that will propel you forward, and momentum is a powerful thing. Once fitness becomes part of your daily routine, staying nice and consistent becomes second nature and feels less like a constant battle.
